In a one-on-one interview with Smart Cities World Forums, H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA commented on DEWA’s current and future projects saying, “We have ambitious plans to exceed 7% of clean energy by 2020 thanks to many initiatives like Shams Dubai which provides a total capacity of more than 130 Megawatts.”
As part of green projects, and as part of the 50-year charter outlined by His Highness Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to improve the quality of life, develop the community of Dubai, and ensure the future of generations to come, another project was launched to build or install solar panels on the rooftop of 5000 houses. Al Tayer added that in addition to installing the panels on 5000 houses, they will also improve consumption of water in the houses. DEWA will also be replacing the panels in case they were old, with new LED Lights. “So by this, you will save nearly from 15% to 20% in each house. We’ve already done it in 2500 buildings so far. This initiative will improve the efficiency and reduce emissions because you are improving the efficiency by either 40% or 30% when transforming these buildings into efficient ones and by doing so, it means that you are reducing the emission and you are reducing the consumption.”
Al Tayer continues, “It’s noteworthy to mention our vision, which is to be a globally leading, innovative sustainable cooperation. We added recently the ‘innovative’ part because innovation is part of the conversion to green economy, and we should accelerate the change to a green economy and to renewables.
“Innovation being a pillar stone for today’s and future projects, His Highness inaugurated at WETEX the world’s first thermodynamic Digital Twin Gas Turbine (GT) Intelligent Controller, which uses Artificial Intelligence and machine learning. The Intelligent Controller has improved turbine efficiency, increased its generation capacity, and reduced fuel consumption, which in turn has reduced harmful emissions. We are proud of this global achievement that increased both the energy generation efficiency and capacity of each unit by around 3.5MW. This reduces fuel consumption and eliminates around 10,000 tons of carbon emissions per unit per year and Nitrogen Oxides by 10% annually.”
When asked about future projects related to water, Al Tayer said, “DEWA’s strategy is very clear, which is to reduce by 30% the cost of water supply by 2030, and we will have 300 million gallons of water in our tanks, and this is mainly from constructing water desalination projects in addition to water transmission, water distribution and water tanks projects.”
