African nation Namibia has suggested it is preparing itself to capitalize on forthcoming 5G technologies following an intensive workshop on the next-generation technology. Telecommunication providers in Namibia were given a presentation on the country's 5G capabilities and spectrum requirements. The workshop was conducted by Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) and LS Telecom, which is an ICT consulting firm that specializes in engineering services and systems solutions suppliers.

Government officials in Rwanda have announced its plans to deploy a city-wide IoT network in the capital city of Kigali as it renews its effort to improve every day services for its citizens. The IoT network will be the established courtesy of mobile satellite communications provider, Inmarsat, and low-power wide-area network company Actility.
A leading technology expert based in the African region believes the topic of 'smart cities' is not 'relevant' in Africa. Chad Baker, who is the VP of Sales in Africa for Japanese company NEC made the admission during a recent interview at MWC. According to Baker he feels that Africa should revisit and explore the 'smart cities' objective in five years - citing that infrastructural, regulatory and attitudinal hurdles currently prohibit the region from being in a position to implement and develop smart city initiatives in the continent.
A leading expert in telecommunications has warned that African telco's need to adapt to the ever-changing information technology landscape in a bid to attract and retain customers in order to remain competitive - in what is already a saturated market.
